What's New at Paradise Valley Springs

 

There's always someting new being developed at Paradise... here are the latest additions to be completed at the park, plus some new arrivals.

New Lion Cub available for patting - August 2010

Baby Ella has joined her big brother Chase in the park daily for visitors to meet and pat - very exciting!

New Baby Lion Cub! - June 2010

Our breeding Lioness Luca has given birth again this year to a beautiful female cub that we have named 'Ella'.  Once again we are bottle feeding after Luca gave up on her Cub when she was two weeks old.  Little Ella is doing great now.

 

Wild Vets TV series - May 2010

TVNZ's second series of Wild Vets features our lion pride again.  This popular program screens every Sunday at 7pm on TV one from the 30th of May.

Lion Cub out for patting - March 2010

Our cute and bouncy eight week old Lion Cub is now available for visitors to meet and have a pat of.

Our Cub has a name - March 2010

Our little Cub has finally been given a name.  TV3's sunrise program ran a naming competition for him, and six year old Ashton Reid from New Plymouth came up with the winning name 'Chase'.

Five year old Lioness Luca has given birth to a male Lion Cub!  He hasn't had the best start to life as his mother's milk dried up when he was two weeks old.  He is being bottle fed, and has recently started eating minced meat.

Our miniature horse 'Spring' has just given birth to a beautiful grey female foal.  She has been called 'Katie' is getting lots of attention from visitors and should grow up to be as friendly as her mother.

Qualmark Enviro-Gold - December 2009

We have recently had our first assessment since Qualmark (New Zealand tourism's official mark of quality) introduced environmental criteria to the assessment process.  We are proud to say that we have achieved 5 out of 5 in the Responsible Tourism criteria and have been awarded Enviro-Gold status!

Fallow Deer Fawns - December 2009

Four fawns have been born to our Fallow Deer hinds at the beginning of December.  They are very secretive, and will spend the first couple of weeks hiding in the long grass before they get used to all the sights and sounds of Paradise.

Grey Geese - November 2009

Our family of Grey Geese have some new additions with the hatching of six fluffy yellow goslings.  The whole family are taking care of the youngsters, and they have just recently begun their first swimming lessons in the Ngongotaha Stream!

 

New Horse - November 2009

A miniature horse named 'Spring' has arrived at the park.  She has a lovely nature and enjoys a good pat from visitors.  Spring is also pregnant, so we are expecting a foal sometime in February/March.

More New Lambs - October 2009

Two new beautiful lambs have been born at the park and are on display in the Farmwalk.  'Baby' one of our friendly hand raised Arapawa Island ewes has had a girl called 'Sally', and one of our several Suffolk ewes has had a boy.  The two are the same age and are getting to know eachother and the public very quickly.

Wooden Tree Trunk Carvings - September 2009

Our carpark has had three large trees removed for safety reasons, and two stumps have been carved - a male Lion, and the other has Trout.  Inside the park many other animals have also been created from trees.  We have a Tuatara, Kiwi, Wood pigeon, Tui, Archeys Frog etc on numerous stumps.  Merv Richdale has carved these fantastic works of art, using a chainsaw!

Our first Trout pool is teeming with baby Trout.  We have 200 four month old Rainbow Trout Fingerlings.  These were bred at our local Fish and Game hatchery further along Paradise Valley Road.

Piglet - August 2009

Our youngest Captain Cooker Pig sow has produced one piglet.  She is black with white legs and face and has been nicknamed 'white socks'.  Our four older piglets aged seven months have left the park, making room for the new addition.

New Lambs - August 2009

Seven bouncing lambs have been born to our Suffolk Sheep ewes.  They are not on full time display inside the park, but can be seen on our adjoining farmland.

Wallaby Joeys - July 2009

Three of our four adult female wallabies have joeys in their pouches, and the largest one is starting to stick its head out of the pouch.

Spring is definately in the air and ducklings have started hatching around the park.

New Lamb - May 2009

A new male lamb, currently named 'Lambo' has been born to one of our Arapawa Island Sheep ewes, and is enjoying meeting new people and the other animals in our farmwalk area.  He is being bottle-fed by staff and looked after by his mother.

Boer Goats - April 2009

Two female Boer Goats, Chelsea and Bubsy have made Paradise home, taking up residence in the paddock adjacent to our main carpark.  These friendly floppy eared goats enjoy time with people and also love being handfed.

A flock of 10 Suffolk Sheep have been introduced to graze our adjoining farmland.

'Bunbuns', our one year old hand raised rabbit has joined the park.  He is extremely friendly and enjoys handfeeding.

Three healthy fawns have been born in the fallow deer paddock just prior to Christmas.

An authentic looking rustic hut has been built on the path next to the Ngongotaha Stream leading out of the Treetops Walk.

More Ducklings - November/December 2008

More ducklings are being born around the park with several clutches being hand raised by staff to ensure their survival, and to make them extra friendly.

Kea aviary extension - November 2008

An walk-through extension was added adjacent to our Kea aviary, allowing you to be in with some of these cheeky parrots!  The entrance is through a replica high country musterers hut, typically found in areas of the South Island of New Zealand.

Piglets - October 2008

'Bella' a ginger Kune Kune pig is being hand raised after being found wandering outside her parents paddock.  First time mother Olive has no motherly tendancies, and Bella was the only surviving piglet in the litter.
'Ruby Black' a little wild Captain Cooker piglet found alone in the Rotorua area has joined Bella, and as the two are near in age they make great playmates.

Captain Cooker pig enclosure - Mid 2008

The enclosure housing our three Captain Cooker pigs has been enlarged slightly.  The pigs are having great fun digging through the soft dirt in the added area.

Phil's Farmview - Early 2008

An area next to our Wetlands viewing shelter was opened up to allow views into our adjoining farmland.  Home to a small flock of sheep and an alpaca, plus horses and occassionally cows.  The grass area also has a pool adjacent which our Black Swans have taken up residence in, along with some wild ducks, pukekos and their offspring.

 

Rainforest Treetops Walk - December 2007

Our Rainforest Treetops Walk opened in December 2007.  Hidden six metres high amongst huge native trees on the edge of the Mamaku Ranges, it gives you a great view of the tree canopy.
